The Overqualified Librarian

In the small, cozy town of Dewdrop Falls, one would expect the most thrilling event to be the annual bake sale. But here we had Edna, a shy librarian with a talent for balancing her glasses precariously on the tip of her nose and navigating her shoelaces like a pro gymnast—unfortunately, without the gymnastics part.

One Tuesday, as Edna dusted off a rather obscure volume titled “Underwater Basket Weaving: The Secrets of the Deep,” a shadow slipped through the aisles like a ninja—except with more hair gel and less stealth. Edna adjusted her glasses and squinted, her internal monologue droning on, What is that smell? Is that my tuna sandwich from last week?

As it turned out, the shadow was Agent Montgomery, a spy who mistakenly believed he was still at the Black and Blue Bar across town, the last refuge of the unsanctioned cocktail hour. With a haphazard flip of his sleek trench coat, he collided directly into Edna, sending her half-opened book sailing like a poorly-thrown Frisbee, smacking him right in the face.

This is it, Edna! Your debut as a covert operative. Think quick! she thought, clutching her stack of beloved cookbooks as if they were a shield. Edna was certainly more at home with yellowing pages and muffin recipes than subterfuge and spy gear.

“Excuse me, ma’am, I need your help—” he stammered, one eye squinting as he fished for the now crumpled page of the recipe that lay beside him.

“Oh, no, not me!” Edna yelped, taking an instinctive step back and tripping over her own untied shoelaces. With a grandiose swoop, she flailed her arms, only to find herself ensnared in the library’s heavy curtains, looking like a mummified, confused parrot. This is my chance! Nothing screams ‘mysterious informant’ like someone draped in a faded floral print.

With one flick of her wrist—more out of sheer panic than coordination—she released the curtain, sending her body toppling into a pile of books marked “Not for the Faint of Heart.” Landing face-first into “Fifty Shades of Grey” did wonders for her composure.

“Uh, you’re not an assassin, are you?” Agent Montgomery stuttered, wrestling with the curtain’s stubborn fabric still hanging around her like a serpent, his charm as lost as her dignity.

Okay, Edna, internalize this moment. One: remember how to breathe. Two: charm your way out. Three: find a cat to distract them—everyone loves cats.

But the only feline companion was Mr. Fluffles, who had no intention of leaving his sunbeam. Just as she thought she might finally pivot toward the exit and save face—or at least an ounce of dignity—Edna accidentally flicked her shoelace in an elegant but utterly unintentional arc that tangled around Agent Montgomery’s legs.

“Why am I like this? Why do I own so many clunky shoes?” she lamented internally as he wobbled dangerously. A single book landed between them, announcing its presence like an unwelcome referee at a wrestling match: “War and Peace.”

With a grand gesture reminiscent of a bull in a china shop, Agent Montgomery lost his balance, stumbling over the oversized tome. He took a tumble, knocking over a display of promotional bookmarks. Each fluttering like a tragic paper snowstorm, they landed on the desk like confetti after a failed wedding.

Edna finally extracted herself from the floral print confines. Just as she gathered enough confidence to survey the wreckage, her gaze locked onto the agent, who now sat among the mess, slightly dazed but chuckling.

“I’ve seen worse.” He pointed to a mysterious figure lurking in the corner—none other than Mrs. Higglesworth, the town gossip, armed with a camcorder, eagerly recording the scene as if she were preparing a highlight reel for America’s Funniest Home Videos.

“Now that is embarrassing,” Edna muttered under her breath. Suddenly, she realized the power of her words had gone to the audience of one. With newfound determination and perhaps an inkling of chaos left in her wake, she exclaimed, “It was all a ruse! I’m actually an undercover librarian, here to collect overdue books!”

But then, in the way that only clumsy Edna could orchestrate, she accidentally hit a nearby bookshelf, and like an avalanche of misplaced Dewey decimals, an entire row of mystery novels came crashing down.

With the books piling around her like an unsuspecting pile of dirty laundry, she had one thought: Maybe the only thing I’ll be assassinated by is my own clutter.

And just when she thought her career had hit rock bottom, Agent Montgomery winked at her, pulled out a very official-looking card, and said, “Congratulations, Edna! You’re our new top spy! Now, do you know where I can find a bathroom?”

The room was silent, and Edna’s cheeks flushed crimson as she replied, “Only if you promise to keep my library books safe… And maybe, you know, consider less spy movie training.”

The spy smiled as Edna thought, Well, I guess I am on a different kind of mission now! I can finally ask for my overdue fines in a cooler way.

And in a whirlwind of disaster and surprise, the last thing she thought as he walked out was, Why is it that my dreams involve spies while my reality includes cleaning up books? Can’t I at least take a self-defense class… that includes shoelace management?
